Primary Responsibilities
As Editor-in-Chief, your key responsibilities include:
- Strategic leadership: Setting the journal's vision, scope, and editorial direction
- Editorial board management: Recruiting, training, and managing associate editors and editorial board members
- Quality control: Maintaining high standards of scholarship and publication ethics
- Decision-making: Making final decisions on manuscript acceptance and rejection
- Journal development: Identifying emerging trends and opportunities for special issues
- Stakeholder engagement: Building relationships with authors, reviewers, readers, and publishers
Strategic Planning
EICs are responsible for:
- Developing and implementing the journal's strategic plan
- Setting goals for impact factor, submissions, and international reach
- Identifying emerging research trends and topics for special issues
- Evaluating and improving editorial processes and policies
Editorial Board Management
Key aspects of managing the editorial board include:
- Recruiting diverse and qualified editorial board members
- Providing clear guidelines and expectations for board members
- Regularly evaluating board member performance
- Organizing board meetings and facilitating communication
- Recognizing and rewarding outstanding contributions
Time Commitment
The typical time commitment for an EIC includes:
- 5-10 hours per week for manuscript oversight
- 2-4 hours per week for editorial board management
- 3-5 hours per month for strategic planning
- Additional time for special issues, conferences, and stakeholder engagement
